In need of a telehandler ticket in Perth?

A telehandler (also known as a telescopic handler, a forklift or a boom lift) has the functionality of a forklift and the reach and strength of a crane that makes these machines great for a variety of jobs. The ability of telehandlers to lift, move and place a range of materials and tools makes it an extremely indispensable machine for most jobs. Like most construction equipment, telehandlers for hire come in different sizes, with a number of different attachment options, so hiring the right one or your job can be a difficult decision.

Before you hire a telehandler, make sure you choose a model that offers you the capabilities you need, whether it’s power, manoeuvrability, lift capacity or lift height, as there’s no one size fits all. To help you decide, we’ve come up with a few key questions to help you decide which telehandler is best suited to your job.
Why would you hire a Telehandler to do your job?

To get started, it’s important to understand why you should hire a telehandler and what benefits it can bring you. Telehandlers are widely used due to the versatility of the machine. They are often used in agricultural settings or in the construction industry, as they have a boom that can extend and lift heavy loads, with different types of end fittings also available. This allows telehandlers to take on a large number of jobs, making projects work quickly and efficiently.

Telehandlers have a range of functions that make them one of the best access equipment to hire for construction work. Telehandlers can lift a truck item, drive over to a building, and then lift it to the second or third floor. This can even be done on unstable surfaces due to the levelling of the frame. This significantly reduces the time for companies to complete projects.

There are two main types of telehandlers

Fixed Telehandlers

Telehandler Rotating

A fixed telehandler is equipped with a fixed cab and a telescopic boom. The cab of this telehandler can’t rotate, but it’s better to move heavy loads across the work site. The rotating telehandler is equipped with a cab and a telescopic boom that can rotate 360°. The machine can remain stationary while the cab and the telescopic boom rotate around the axis providing extreme manoeuvrability. The rotating telehandler is very useful when working in tight areas and in uneven terrain due to its stabilisers. They can also reduce the space needed on the job site compared to the fixed telehandler.

Telehandlers for hire consist of categories of multiple sizes:

Super Compact: small lifting capacity and between 3.3 and 5.6 metres. Like a forklift, with the exception of more versatility thanks to multiple attachments.
Compact: reaches up to 10 metres and can lift up to 4 tonnes.
Standard Lift: Working height range of 6 and 11 metres with a higher lifting capacity. These telehandlers for hire are the standard range and are ideal for most jobs.
High Lift: can reach up to 17 metres and can lift up to 4 tonnes. Designed to be extremely difficult to reach places.
High Load: Lift capacity ranges from 5.2 to 7.2 tonnes, with a range of up to 10 metres. Great for transporting a large quantity of materials across the work site.

Telehandlers can also come with various forms of steering, including front-wheel steering, four-wheel steering and crab steering. All of these telehandlers for hire may be used for a number of jobs in any agricultural or construction project. It is vital that you hire the right type of telehandler with the appropriate steering option that is appropriate for your job.

What kind of job will the Telehandler be hired for?

When choosing a telehandler to hire, it is important to understand the work that the telehandler will do, as this will have an impact on the decision that you ultimately make. Two of the main things that you can consider making your decision easier are: how heavy and high is the load you lift and how accessible the job is.
How high and heavy is your load?

When you hire a telehandler, you need to know what it’s like you’re going to pick up and how high and how far you’re going to lift it. Look at the heaviest material you’re going to lift to determine your maximum lifting requirements. The heavier the load, the larger the lift capacity that the telehandler you hire must have.

It is also important to know where the material is going. Are you going to get up or up and over something? This is important as the rated operating capacity of the telehandlers may change when the telehandler boom is extended, which may cause the telehandler to tip. It is important to review the machine load chart to determine how heavy the load can be.
How Accessible is your job, huh?

Considering the accessibility of your job, it is important to hire a telehandler. Does your job require you to reach a high-access area? If that is the case, you will need a telehandler that has a longer reach to insure that you can reach it. If your job is to lift pallets to a truck, you won’t need a high lift telehandler.

You should also consider the driving capability of your telehandler. If your job is in a tight access area that’s hard to turn in, a telehandler with crab steering is your best option. If you were on a farm with rough terrain, a four-wheel telehandler would best suit your job.
Do you need more than one job to complete?

Telehandler versatility is one of the key reasons why it is a widely used machine in the agricultural and construction industries. There are a wide variety of rental attachments that can be attached to the end of the telehandler, including:

Elevated Work Platforms/Carriage
Bullets
Truss Booms/Lifting Hooks
Gain Forks
Pipe Grapple
Augs.

The ability to drive on tough terrain and operate under harsh conditions makes the telehandler a great tool to use. From the collection and installation of palletized loads, to the work of buckets and the suspension of loads, a wide range of available attachments lends telehandlers to numerous tasks across a wide range of industries. It is important that you choose a telehandler that can accommodate all attachments that you may want to use, as not all attachments fit on all telehandlers.

In need of telehandler training in Perth?

In Australia, the licensing requirements for the operation of a telehandler vary depending on the attachment for heavy lifting and the power of the machine. While all telehandler variations may seem simple to use, the operation of this type of machine can be complex and versatile. It is best to check whether a licence is required for the kind of work you are planning. The machine will either need a high-risk work licence, a work platform certificate or no licence.

A high-risk work license is required when a telehandler is fitted with a boom or jib and a hook block. If the telehandler is fitted with a staff box directly attached to the main boom and the staff box can be extended 11 metres further, an elevated work platform certificate is required. No licence is required if the telehandler is fitted with attachments such as buckets or forks.

What is a high-risk work licence?

A high-risk work licence is required if you work with certain high-risk equipment or machines, such as telehandlers, scissors and crane trucks. The fee for a high-risk work licence varies from state to state.

What is a Certificate of Elevated Platform?

The Elevated Workplace Platform Certificate covers training in the skills required to use different types of elevated work platforms safely. Including the planning and preparation of operations, the selection of correct attachments, the operation of machinery and the execution of post-operation procedures.

The standard course fee for the Elevated Work Platform Certificate is generally between $400 and $600, with different accreditors offering specials and combo courses.

The standard course is normally delivered over two days, with another day for assessment in a classroom setting. Shorter evening training is also available, taught over a longer period of time. Courses have an excellent pass rate, with students supported by accredited trainers and assessors.

Courses such as ‘TLILIC0005—License to operate a Boom-type Elevated Platform (boom length 11m or more)’ are eligible for funding from the Construction Industry Training Board. Over 200 short courses are available to make training more affordable. Course ‘RIIHAN309E—Conducting telescopic materials handling operations’ is a more advanced course needed to work in the resource and infrastructure industries.

What are the general requirements of the telehandler course?

To register for a high-risk licence or an elevated platform certificate, visiting the government website for a complete list of inclusive information is best. However, here is a quick general guideline for licensing or certification.

Minimum of 18 years of age

Provide more than two identification forms

Wear safety boots and sunscreen during training.

To be able to read and write basic English

Pass on a language, literacy and numeracy assessment

What am I supposed to look for in a telehandler course?

Detailed plan of training

Health and safety training

Live demonstration

Clear directions

Written and practical evaluation

All training materials and a hi-vis jacket have been provided

Statement of achievement

Recognised training course with a registered training organisation

In need of telehandler training in Perth?

In this post, we’ll go over what licence and/or training is required for each machine and the key differentiating characteristics of each machine to help you tell them apart.

In order to operate a forklift in Australia, you are required to obtain a High Risk Work License, either in class LF or LO.

The LF licence is for the offset forklift (most commonly used forklift) and the LO licence is for the Order Picking forklift. The High Risk Work Forklift License will only allow you to operate a Forklift.

To obtain a High Risk Work License, you must complete the training and High Risk Work Assessment through the Registered Training Organization (RTO) and submit your successful High Risk Work License Assessment (NSA) to the WHS regulator of your country or territory. How you submit your ANS depends on where you have completed your assessment. For example, students who complete their NSW forklift assessment are required to submit their assessment paperwork to a post office, while students who complete their QLD assessment are required to submit their assessment paperwork online via their myGov account.

Telescopic Handler (Telehandler) Forklift licence

Telehandler licencing is a bit more confusing, because it varies depending on the capacity of the telehandler you operate, the attachment being used, and the state or territory in which you operate. You will either require a Duty of Care (DOC) training, such as a Gold Card Telehandler License, or you may require a High Risk Work License.

As far as the Duty of Care Training is concerned, we always recommend the Telehandler Gold Card licence because it is issued and regulated by the Australian Telescopic Handler Association (TSHA) and is commonly requested at work sites around Australia.

The Nationally Recognized Competence Unit RIIHAN309E – Conducting telescopic materials handling operations can also be completed on its own or in conjunction with the Gold Card License.

See table below for when training with DOC or Gold Card (GC) is required.

So, if you require a High Risk Work licence to operate a telehandler, which one do you get? Well, according to SafeWork’s licence, the Telehandler actually falls under the Mobile Crane category except when it has an EWP basket attachment with a width of more than 11m. In this case, it is classified as a Boom type EWP and will require a High Risk Work WP licence to operate.

This means that if you hold an HRW Crane License class CN, you are covered to operate a non-swivel telehandler of any size, in any state, with all attachments except the EWP basket with a width of more than 11m. If you hold any of the following HRW Crane Licensing classes CN, C2, C6, C1, C0, you are responsible for operating any slewing or non-slewing telehandler of any size, in any state, with all attachments except the EWP basket with a width of more than 11m.
Forklift to VS Telehandler

So now you know which licence you need for each machine, but it’s not always that easy to tell the machines apart, so we’re going to give you the key to identify the qualities of each machine that will allow you to identify which machine you’re looking at.
Forklift: The forklift will have a vertical mast and a lift truck. The body is fitted with a pair of fork tynes or other load-bearing attachment.

In need of a telehandler ticket in Perth?

If you’ve worked in the construction, warehousing or mining industries in Australia, you’ve probably encountered a lot of forklifts during your time in the workforce. These dynamic machines have a wide range of lifting capacities and are easy to move heavy loads.

Since there is a wide range of models and styles available on the market, it can be tricky to decide which forklift is right for you. Whether you’re looking to purchase one for private or commercial use, or you’re looking to hire a forklift, it’s crucial to understand the key differences between the machines.

What is the Right Forklift for your Project?

Forklifts are used to carry items from A to B, and while they are typically found in warehouses, they are capable of performing work in a number of environments. From work on commercial construction sites to projects on massive seagoing vessels, forklifts are critical parts of the equipment. But what is the right choice for your job? Check out the different kinds of things below.

Telehandler Forklift

Telehandler forklifts, also known as telescopic forklifts, have a boom and a stretching arm, making a combination of a crane and a forklift. The twin forks attached to the telehandler forklift arm are used to move the pallets off the ground. These forklifts are perfect for narrow space and tough angles. If you’re looking to hire a telehandler forklift from Australia.

Warehouse Forklift

As mentioned earlier, forklifts are the most frequently hired and recognisable type of forklift. These machines look like a golf cart with twin forks stretching from the front. They will most often be used in a facility with a large number of items in stock.

Industrial Forklifts

Industrial forklifts take things a step beyond the storage forklift, both in terms of lifting capacity and size. Industrial forklifts can lift 15 tonnes, even if they are much less manoeuvrable than standard warehouse forklifts.

Rough Terrain Forklift

Best suited for outdoor projects, rough terrain forklifts are ideal for use on uneven ground. The rough terrain forklifts come with a reinforced cage cab and oversized tyres for added stability, which also means they can carry heavier loads.

Gas and Petrol Forklifts.

LPG powered forklifts are quieter than their diesel counterparts, and the exhaust fumes are also less offensive in comparison, making them more ideal for indoor use. Lift speeds, travel speeds and acceleration rates are also better compared to diesel and electrical equivalents due to their more responsive engines and higher weight-to-power ratios.

Electric Forklifts.

Although electric forklifts are not as powerful as their fuel-powered counterparts, they are more mobile and manoeuvrable than diesel and petrol. Electric forklifts are also great for storing or working in enclosed areas because they do not emit any fumes.

Electric forklift batteries also work as effective counterweights, are efficient to run and can charge through the mains while being incredibly quiet (especially when you compare them to diesel and petrol-powered forklifts). Electric forklifts can operate with payloads of up to 5 tonnes.

Diesel Forklifts.

Diesel-powered forklifts are a good option for a number of reasons. First, they are incredibly cheap to run, fuel-efficient, and thrive in working areas with steep gradients. Diesel forklifts are the most powerful option for towing duties, too, or in the event that a bucket is used for scooping on the forks. Diesel forklifts can operate with payloads of up to 50 tonnes.

With the various attachments, additions, sizes and models of the telehandlers that are available, it can be difficult to understand which telehandler you need for a successful project. This blog will insure that you choose the right telehandler to hire for the job you need, with costs down and efficiency increasing.
Which telehandler attachment do I need to use?

Before selecting which telehandler attachment is the correct one for your job, you should first analyse the job site and understand the functionality you want your telehandler to have. With over 40 different attachments, knowing what is best for your telehandler job is crucial to ensuring that your project is both time-consuming and cost-effective. You’ll find that telehandler attachments are similar to forklifts and cranes, and it all comes down to which machine and attachment is best suited for your site.

What’s the hi-rail telehandler?

A hi-rail telehandler is a telehandler that can operate on both conventional and rail roads. These telehandlers come standard with their conventional rubber tyres, but they can also be fitted with flanged steel wheels to run on rails. The aim of the conversion of hi-rail telehandlers is to complete the work on the rails in areas that are not accessible to normal wheeled telehandlers.

What’s the fork attachment?

The attachment for the fork is the most commonly used attachment for the telehandler. This essentially modifies a telehandler to a machine capable of lifting various loads of heavy equipment, such as:

Fork attachments are very diverse as they can be customised to suit the size and materials you are currently using. The following fork attachments are:

Pallet fork – designed to pick up and move palletized materials
Tilting cart – make it easier to deliver materials on hills or roofs
Adjustable carriage – allows adjusting the width of the fork
Side-shift carriage – can move the carriage to the left or the right with ease.

What’s the Auger Attachment?

The telehandler auger attachment can be used for drilling small holes for irrigation purposes or for larger holes for telegraph poles. In order to use the right auger attachment, take into account the drill head, the drive unit and the swing control coupling will allow you to hire the right attachment. In combination, the size and the teeth must also be considered as the size needed to match the hydraulic pressure of the telehandlers, and the teeth must be adapted to the ground type.
What does the telehandler work platform attachment do?

Elevated Work Platforms (EWPs) are an attachment that enables people and equipment to be lifted and lowered in order to perform tasks. These EWPs are generally used for temporary use in the case of powerline maintenance, firefighter emergency access or construction work. They are only designed to hold a limited amount of weight – usually less than a tonne, but there are some models with a higher working load.

What does the telehandler hydraulic winch attachment do?

Instead of hiring a crane for heavy lifting needs, a winch attachment for your telehandler will just as easily complete the task. The winch attachment may have a length adjusted to insure that the task is as accurate as possible. Safety features are an important part of the winch attachment, which includes a limit sensor for movement up and down as well as a swivel self-locking hook. The winch is ideal for tight workspaces and does not result in the use of other equipment, lowering costs and increasing efficiency.
What’s the bucket attachment?

The bucket attachment is a specially designed piece of equipment to transport any loose material you may have on your work site. There are different sizes of buckets to accommodate any material that may need to be transported. Larger buckets are commonly used for lighter materials, while general purpose buckets – usually standard on telehandlers – are excellent for digging dry soil. A multipurpose bucket is inspired by dozing, back blading and digging and can be used for this purpose if you often switch between environments or attachments. Some buckets are also produced with grapples, which can secure materials larger than the width of the bucket.
